Track A: Workshop

Room: Oslo
13:00 Workshop: Why Design Matters

Instructors
William Amurgis, Manager, Intranet Strategy, American Electric Power
Don DeHoff, Senior Interactive Developer, American Electric Power

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but even the most beautiful objects collect dust if you can't use them or interact with them.

In this session, American Electric Power will describe its audience-centered Web design process that led to recognition as one of the world's 10 best intranets by the Nielsen Norman Group.

Specifically, you'll learn how to:

  • Respect and engage your audience
  • Defend design decisions (which are never arbitrary)
  • Evoke emotional responses (rendering the impersonal more personal); and
  • Produce a redesign with little staff and no additional funding (and a smaller team is better, anyway).
14:30 Coffee and networking

Room: Oslo
15:00 Workshop: Where collaboration fits in

Instructor
James Robertson, Step Two Designs

Delivering successful collaboration tools (including SharePoint), and fitting them alongside the intranet

Collaboration tools such as wikis and team spaces can spread like a 'virus' within organisations. These can end up competing with the intranet, and making information harder to find. This workshop will explore a model for collaboration that will help to ensure they grow in a manageable and effective way. The workshop will also answer the question: where do collaboration tools fit alongside the intranet?

Attendee Skill Level: Novice

Target Audience
Intranet managers and intranet teams, knowledge management teams, IT teams responsible for deploying collaboration tool.

16:30

End of Workshop Track A

Workshop Track B

Room: Helsinki
13:00

Workshop: Enterprise Intranet Personas - Part 1

Instructor
Howard McQueen, McQueen Consulting

Using User Research techniques and personas to drive intranets and portals programs.

The value of “know thy customer” if realized, can be a strategic advantage in driving intranets and enterprise portal initiatives.  Much work has been done in the field of user research and personas, but 99% of this work has focused on external customers (buyers, consumers, etc.).   If you want to learn to apply these tools and methodologies to internal audiences, this workshop will give you a strategic advantage.

More about the workshop
